The Effect of Ox-Bile on the Multiplication of Vibrio vulnificus

Abstract
This study was performed to develop a method of more rapid diagnosis of V. vulnificus infection among the patients suspected of Vibrio septicemia.
Ox-bile, an ingredient of TCBS agar that has been used most frequently as a selective media for identification of Vibrio species, was known to inhibit growth of other organisms than Vibrio pecies. Role of ox-bile should be evaluated for the goal
of
selective enrichment of Vibrio vulnificus in terms of rapid identification and time-saving for colony formation.
Relative efficiency of cellobiose-beef extract-peptone-neutral red (CBPN) agar, which was newly designed by author for the selective cultivation of Vibrio vulnificus, was compared with that of TCBS agar.
1. As a enrichment media BHI was best because it took just 4 hours of culture and 15-18 hours of cultivation in peptone broth seemed to be comparable.
2. The colony formation of V. vulnificus was delayed or inhibited on TCBS agar plate contained ox-bile and increasing concentration of ox-bile in culture media showed a agreement with increased degree of growth inhibition of V. vulnificus.
3. CBPN agar medium confirmed to be much better than any other selective media tested for selective enrichment of V. vulnificus.
